We have reached an agreement on a policy that allows members to enroll their children, under certain conditions, in schools where they work. Both sides are committed to making this work, and we trust it will.
There is a new provision in the collective bargaining agreement between the Boston Teachers Union and the Boston School Committee pertaining to enrollment of teachers¹ children in Boston public schools. This provision provides teachers, who reside within the City of Boston, the opportunity to enroll their children at the school in which they teach provided that there is “an open seat and no one on the wait list.” Therefore, as of July 1st, of any given year, if there is an available seat in the school in which a teacher works (and no one on the waitlist for that program/grade), s/he may request that his/her child be assigned to that school.
This request would be made directly to the director of Enrollment Planning and Support (EP&S), Jerry Burrell. On July 1st, EP&S will review requests, contact any member in whose school a seat is available, and offer the option to assign their child.
For teachers seeking to register their children in BPS before that July time period, (in order to have options in their zone, as well as at their school), one should visit a Family Resource Center and follow the usual steps for registration, including choosing schools within your zone. However, members seeking to take advantage of the new provision should send an email request to Jerry Burrell at firstname.lastname@example.org preferably before July 1st. Should a seat in the school at which the teacher works be unavailable as of July 1st, it is his/her responsibility to contact Enrollment Planning and Support to learn of any subsequent openings at their workplace school. Should a seat vacancy occur, Enrollment Services will exhaust any waiting list, and if no family on the waiting list is interested, will then offer the seat vacancy to the teacher¹s child if that seat vacancy still exits and the teacher has followed the process above with respect to informing Enrollment Services about his/her interest in a vacancy.
Please note that if a teacher wants schools within his/her zone, including the school at which s/he works, they simply apply through the established process for all families. No additional consideration is provided for teachers who reside in the zone in which they work. Regardless of zone, if the workplace school was not among schools chosen prior to July 1st, staff should contact the Enrollment Planning and Support director to determine seat availability.
Rules that govern the assignment plan preclude the transfer of students after the end of the transfer period in January, so no opportunity to backfill empty seats is available after that time.
