The measure before the Boston City Council to ask BTU members to work without pay for one day to pay for 40 custodial positions died without coming to the floor of the council. Both the BTU and the Custodians Association felt it was improper and a reach for the council to get involved. That said, we support the restoration of theĀ custodians’ positions, and we will continue to work with the Association to restore those positions. In the fall, we will work closely with the custodians to monitor the conditions of our buildings.
BTU members, parents and students all recognize that having clean buildings, each well-maintained on a reasonable schedule is essential to a healthy learning and teaching environment. Poorly maintained schools send a negative message to our students that their educational experience is not valued.
