On Saturday, September 6, the Boston Teachers Union, with the help of dozens of community partners and members, hosted the first annual Back to School Resource Fair at White Stadium in Franklin Park. Approximately 600 braved the 90 degree temperatures for a fun and informative afternoon.
Parents investigated a variety of educational resources, including health and safety information and tips for helping one”s child in school. Information on how to access children’s services, nutrition counseling, homework help, and school services such as transportation and family engagement were provided by tables of experts from our schools and central office.
Children enjoyed face painting, balloon making, and glitter tattooing. All children left the Resource Fair with a book, and food was served. There was music and entertainment as well.
The Boston Teachers Union was pleased to sponsor this activity, the first of its kind. It won’t be the last!
A special thank you to Superintendent John McDonough whose team provided a great deal of help as well as resources to our team. Superintendent McDonough and Mayor Walsh both attended the fair, each staying for a good while and mingling with attendees. Thank you as well to the dozen or so folks who met at the BTU office over the course of the last month to pull this event together. Thank you ALL!
