SMART Plan Meetings: December 10
Are you on track for retirement? The SMART 457(b) Plan offers tax advantaged savings to help you build a more secure retirement. Our SMART Plan Advisor, Marianne Cole, will be holding SMART Plan meetings at the BTU on December 10. All are welcome to attend, whether currently participating in the SMART Plan or not, please RSVP to email@example.com. For those participating in the plan, we are offering Retirement Readiness Reviews. As a Retirement Plan Advisor, Marianne is now able to provide more comprehensive overviews of participants’ financial pictures, and assist with a personalized savings and investment plan based on each individual’s unique goals.
NEW — Election Committee Meeting: December 11
The Election Committee has now met three times, and is in the process of selecting a vendor for the 2019 BTU election. Four proposals have been received, and three of the vendors have been invited to give a final presentation to the committee. Each meeting is open to the membership, with the first 15 minutes devoted to questions and comments from members. Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 11 at 5 PM. Meetings from previous minutes can be accessed on the member portal at members.btu.org.
BTU Children’s Holiday Party: December 27
Please join us at the BTU from 12-2 PM for the annual Children’s Holiday Party! We’ll have a DJ, Magician Jim Munsey, face painting, an obstacle course, crafts, a photo booth, and light refreshments. Tickets are free but must be picked up in advance. See the flyer for more.
NEW — Election Committee: Information for Potential Candidates: January 10
For those who may be interested in running for office, the Election Committee will hold an “Information for Potential Candidates” meeting on Thursday, January 10 at 4:30 PM at the BTU. Former President Richard Stutman will join us for a presentation and Q&A about the details and responsibilities of the various offices and positions up for election.

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites high school students to describe and analyze an act of political courage by a US elected official who served during or after 1917, the year JFK was born. The first-place winner receives $10,000. Second-place receives $3,000. Five finalists receive $1,000 each. Eight semifinalists receive $100 each. Ten students receive honorable mention. Learn more.
NEW — New England Schools for the Deaf Basketball Tip-Off Tournament: Saturday and Sunday
You are invited! The Horace Mann Cougars will host the American School for the Deaf, Marie Phillip School for the Deaf, Rhode Island School for the Deaf and OUR Horace Mann School for the Deaf, girls and boys basketball teams at Emmanuel College, on December 1 and 2. Admission is $3 for one day and $5 for both days. Horace Mann School Students and under 12 years old are free of charge. Refreshments available for cash purchase. The Black Educators’ Alliance of Massachusetts is a co-sponsor of the Annual NABA Ebony Winter Gala. BEAM donates proceeds from the event to award college scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Last year they awarded seven scholarships. See the flyer for details. InSPIRED Fellows are In–Service Professionals who are committed to Increasing theRacial and Ethnic Diversity of our teacher workforce. This Fellowship is designed around two goals: (1) increase the diversity of the teaching workforce in Massachusetts and (2) increase the retention rates of current educators committed to a diverse workforce. Massachusetts AFL-CIO scholarship program awardees receive between $500 and $16,000 towards their education. Over 40 unions, central labor councils, area businesses and charitable trusts from across Mass. participate in awarding scholarships that total nearly half a million dollars. We are sorry to let you know that Gloster James Harris passed away last week. He is the husband to retired BTU member Bettye Harris, and he is the father of Jerina Harris, a teacher at the Joyce Kilmer School. Gloster will be laid to rest on Saturday, December 1 in Alabama.
