This September the first day of school for children, Thursday September 5, falls on Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year. The same timing occurred a few years ago. The school district has been asked, as it was asked in 2010, to change the start date so the opening of school for children does not fall on Thursday. What we did then, and what we have proposed doing now, is to merge Day “2” into Day “1” and create a 50-50 day that is spent half on PD and half on room preparation, leaving the time owed from Day 2 (Wednesday) to be made up as proposed in the attached (see link below). Day 2, Wednesday, will now become the opening day of school for children. The long and the short of it is, Day 2 will be converted to hours, three of which teachers will commit to on their own, and three of which will be made up like other PD. There will be one less day of school for staff in the 2013-2014 school year as a result. Please see the attached proposed agreement, which will go to the membership at the next meeting for as vote.
