  • Bringing the Campus of Boston into Your Classroom: Teaching with Historic Places
    Professional Development for Boston Public and Charter School Teachers
    Place-based teaching and learning is an approach designed to engage learners in the stories and resources of a place to activate interdisciplinary learning. Boston’s richness of place-based resources expands across the city and links neighborhoods and schoolyards to sites of international significance. In this course, teachers will work with museum, historic site and national park educators to explore the value of place-based teaching and learning, on site and in your classroom. In 2023, as we make our way toward 2026 and the 250th anniversary of the nation, we are excited to welcome teachers back to an in-person experience and reintroduce you to our sites and all they have to offer students in their own city.

  • Open Up/MVP Planning Cohort
    This Planning Cohort will address the question, “How do we implement a new math curriculum and build effective planning routines without feeling overwhelmed?” A Planning Cohort is a space for educators to collaboratively plan with the support of a teacher expert. During the Planning Cohort you will have time to unpack the Open Up/MVP math curriculum to develop a thoughtful unit plan, pool resources with other teachers in a similar context, and receive feedback from peers and coaches.   • National Parks of Boston Two-Day Teacher Workshops
    Join National Parks of Boston education staff in a 2-day workshop to help build and solidify our curriculum framework and school program engagement model. While taking stock of the parks’ past educational offerings, teacher input if sought to create an intentional framework to guide future lesson plan development and engagement with Boston Public Schools.   • Critical Disciplinary Professional Development
    This course is designed for secondary content teachers. Across these 6 modules you will learn how to use critical disciplinary literacy as an approach to teaching disciplinary content.
    Participants will understand critical disciplinary literacy as an approach to teaching disciplinary content, evaluate current instructional practices, learn to incorporate a critical disciplinary approach to curriculum development and instructional design and use a critical disciplinary literacy approach to lesson and unit planning. Completion of this 12-hour course

    This learning site on April 4, 2023 addresses the question “How do we support multilingual students to be independent learners through productive struggle and collaboration?” Hosted by Sarah Benat (Brighton High School), the site will demonstrate one teacher’s approach to answering this question while thinking through providing access points for students and building in opportunities for academic conversation.     Middle School Science Learning Site: This learning site on March 31, 2023 addresses the question “How do we develop conceptual understanding in a student-centered science classroom?” Hosted by Michelle Carroll (6th grade science teacher @O’Donnell Elementary), the site will demonstrate one teacher’s approach to answering this question while thinking through engaging students in science practices like modeling while ensuring that all students come to a shared understanding of key ideas.   • Place-Based Boston Summer Institute
    Goal:
    Place-based teaching and learning is an approach to education designed to immerse learners in local heritage, cultures, landscapes, opportunities and experiences. These unique characteristics of place can be used across disciplines to engage learners, and work especially well in co-creating a compelling and relevant civics curriculum with students and Place-Based Boston Partners. This course will focus on building a Place-Based Teaching and Learning (PBTL) community of practice with teachers and PBB partners, using Boston’s rich place-based resources across the city, linking neighborhoods and schoolyards to sites of international significance. In this course, teachers will work with museum, historic site and national park educators to explore the potential of place through the co-creation of replicable place-based experiences.

  • HGSE Teaching and Teacher Leadership (TTL) Program
    Interns are in a single, 10-month placement 3 days/week from September-December and 5 days/week from January-May. Mentors will be compensated $1650 for the ’23-’24 school year. Intern/mentor matching meetings will be held on zoom the week of May 8th-12th. Please submit this form with your information by April 13th , 2023 if you’re interested in being in our mentor pool.TTL mentors should be: leading joyful, equitable, and rigorous learning in their own classroom; skilled at communicating how and why they make teaching choices; committed to developing their own practice through mentoring others; teaching ELA, history, math, or science in a secondary school (grades 5-12) in the Boston Metro Area.
