Summer Organizing Institute 2021: Dreams will not be met because we ask
“Freedom dreaming is imagining worlds that are just, representing people’s full humanity, centering people left on the edges, thriving in solidarity with folx from different identities who have struggled together for justice, and knowing that dreams are just around the corner with the might of people power. The marketplace will attack and attempt to co-opt these freedom dreams. Dreams will not be met because we ask.” ~Dr. Bettina Love
Join BTU members for our annual Summer Organizing Institute, where we will Freedom Dream together about the future of our schools. We find ourselves in a moment of recovery, with stimulus dollars coming into our school system and a contract fight on the horizon. What can we win in our contract? How can we ensure stimulus money is spent where it’s most needed? How do we build solidarity to strengthen our education justice fights?
This virtual conference will feature four sessions. We’ll kick off the morning of the 28th with the Member Assembly, where we’ll celebrate and reflect on our 2020-2021 campaigns, committee, and member organizer work and Freedom Dream together. We’ll then dive into two sessions of skill-builders where all members will have the opportunity to hone their organizing skills. We’ll close out on the evening of the 29th with a Community Contract Package Launch, underscoring the importance of solidarity with families and students.
Whether it’s your first time at a BTU event, or you’re a seasoned union activist, we hope you’ll join us! The first 100 people to register and attend will receive a swag bag including Rethinking Schools’ new book Teacher Unions and Social Justice and a BTU shirt.
