Boston schools Superintendent Tommy Chang is “parting ways” with the city after only three years of his five-year contract, he announced late yesterday.
“I am in active negotiations with the Boston School Committee for a mutual parting of ways,” Chang said in a statement.
Mayor Martin J. Walsh said the decision to look for a new school leader came from both sides.
“Over the past year, I have spent a lot of time thinking about the progress we have made to improve education in Boston and the significant work ahead to ensure that we successfully reach the ambitious goals we have set for our students and schools,” Walsh said in a statement. “After several conversations with Tommy Chang about the future of Boston Public Schools, we have mutually agreed that there needs to be a change in leadership at BPS.”
