BOSTON TEACHERS UNION SHARES STATEMENT ON MAYOR MICHELLE WU’S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON IMMIGRATION
Educators calls for additional steps to protect immigrant students and their families
BOSTON, MA – We strongly support Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s executive order to ensure the Constitution is upheld, keep our immigrant communities safe, and to prevent ICE from coming to our schools. This is an important step to protect our community. The Boston Teachers Union has always been clear: our schools must be places of safety, stability, and belonging for every child. Children cannot learn when they are scared to come to school, worried that a loved one might disappear, or afraid that their classroom could become a site of disruption rather than learning. It is all of our jobs to protect students and their families, and we are glad to see the City of Boston taking this step today.
We also call on the City and the School Department to build on this order and inform families when there is federal immigration enforcement activity happening within 2 blocks of a school and issue clear, written, public guidance for protocols when this activity occurs during recess, arrival, and dismissal periods. These additional measures will go further to keep our students and their families safe.
