Former Superintendent Tommy Chang is getting a payout of nearly $300,000 in a deal approved in executive session by the School Committee this week — a move at least one city councilor says betrays public trust.

The School Committee agreed to pay Chang $267,383 — a year’s salary — and nearly $30,000 in unused vacation pay, as well as providing him with a positive letter of recommendation behind closed doors without taking any public action earlier this week.

City Councilor Annissa Essaibi George called out the school board for its apparent lack of transparency and said the board should reconvene to vote on the exit package.
