Teachers and staff at the City on a Hill charter school in New Bedford announced Monday they will join the Boston Teachers Union, joining their counterparts at two City on a Hill schools in Roxbury.

“We overcame a lot to achieve this victory for workers, students, and parents,” said Katie Vaudrain, a history teacher at the New Bedford charter school.

The Boston Teachers Union is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers Massachusetts. Teachers and staff from the three schools say they chose to unionize to improve teacher retention and pay equity and gain more input on decision-making.

“Our priority is creating exceptional and successful learning experiences for all students. That means improving the working conditions of all educators, including those working at charter schools funded by public taxpayer dollars, to reduce turnover and sustain stable learning environments for students,” said Jessica Tang, president of the Boston Teacher Union.
