  • Navigating our Democracy: A Forum on Promoting Democratic Ideals in the Classroom
    Join us for a forum that will provide tools and resources you can use in your classroom that foster civil discourse and support a critical understanding of voting rights and political polarization in the United States.
  • Creating Learning Environments in a Digital Space
    K-12 practitioner-friendly 2.5 week, fully online, facilitator guided course. In addition to creating lessons for remote learning, all participants will be awarded a certificate of completion and 15 Professional Development points to apply to their professional development plans. This engaging course will be hosted on Canvas, BC’s Learning Management system. Course completion requires participants to work independently and with classmates to complete the lesson assignments; it also requires participation in three virtual class meetings over Zoom.

  • Teaching the Refugee Experience: Welcome to the New World
    Graphic novels are an engaging and creative tool to teach students about important social issues. When it comes to immigrants and refugees, learning about their experiences, motivations and common values through not just words but visuals is crucial to understanding what U.S. immigration is all about. Join The Immigrant Learning Center’s Public Education Institute and the Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate program for a free, online teacher training on Welcome to the New World, a new graphic novel for grades seven through 11 by Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Jake Halpern and illustrator Michael Sloan, on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, 5-6 PM EST.   • Remote Teaching & Learning Modules Series

    On September 2nd, the Center for Instructional Support will release the Remote Teaching & Learning Modules Series. This is a free, 5-part series of self-guided modules for teachers and other school-based educators who will be engaging in remote teaching and learning this coming year, whether through a hybrid or fully remote model. Each module includes specific instructional practices, tips, and strategies for remote teaching in key areas such as Curriculum & Planning, Learning Environment, Family Collaboration, and Professional Collaboration. Educators will also have the opportunity to dig deeper into content-specific strategies aligned to MA curriculum frameworks, reflect on culturally responsive practice, and explore digital tools and resources supportive of both live and asynchronous instruction.
    Each module includes a learning and exploration section, followed by recommended reflection activities and applications to a teacher’s specific school and classroom. If possible, we encourage educators to experience the modules in pairs or teams to maximize collective knowledge and take-aways.

  • The Three Rs
    Every educator is facing an unprecedented challenge this fall. This is why the American Federation of Teachers has partnered with Turnaround for Children to bring AFT members a series of professional learning opportunities to help in supporting students through the lens of relationships and understanding the strategies to help every student succeed.
    Kickoff session: Sept. 15, 6:30 p.m. EDT
    All participants must attend this session to participate in the learning series. Turnaround for Children founder and senior science advisor Pamela Cantor, M.D., will draw on discoveries from the science of learning and development to answer these questions: How do young people discover what they are capable of? What is any young person capable of under the right conditions? Is all stress bad for you? What is going to happen to learning development in the era of COVID-19? Are there opportunities and, if so, how can we optimize them?

  • Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Educator Series
    For the sixth year, the AFT has partnered with the Delta Research and Educational Foundation and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Inc. to provide informative, engaging and in-demand professional development opportunities centered on our shared belief that public schools should be places where children are prepared for college, careers and life. A series of virtual professional development sessions will examine critical spaces where educators can make a difference in the lives of children that will lead to their success and bright futures. Session participants are eligible to receive professional development units.

This report, details the very basic conditions needed to open schools,-critical safety and health guidelines, and instructional considerations.     The Not So Distant Learning course is designed to guide teachers step-by-step through planning for remote and hybrid instruction that is grounded in antiracist pedagogy. BTU member Jess Madden-Fuoco worked with  48 teachers from across the BPS to build the course out with examples for K-12; for all subject areas; and for all student populations.   • WIDA Professional Development Update
    Many educators are being asked to complete the WIDA 15 Hour self-paced Language Objectives and Differentiation PD. Educators must be afforded contractual time to complete this PD. If contractual time is not provided and you are required to complete it, you may do so on your own time and be compensated at your real pro-rata rate.
