The Boston Teachers Union applauds the Massachusetts Senate for setting up a vote on the Retirement Plus bill that restores a promise made to many of the Commonwealth’s longest-serving educators.

For years, veteran teachers who dedicated decades of their lives to Massachusetts students have faced an unfair retirement penalty due to flaws in the Retirement Plus program. The vote announced today ensures that educators who spent their careers serving their communities will receive the retirement security they earned through years of service in our schools.

Educators who devoted their careers to teaching generations of students should not be penalized because of a technical flaw in the law. We are grateful to the legislators, retirees, educators, and advocates who fought to make this long-overdue fix a reality. We would especially thank Sen Liz Miranda who has led the effort in the Senate for several sessions and the dedicated educators on the Committee for a Fair Fix for R+ for their many years of advocacy.

We look forward to the bill being finalized and signed into law and to seeing deserving teachers receive the benefits they have earned.
