The BTU seeks 8-12 Summer Organizing Union Leaders (SOULs) to build power for our next round of BPS-BTU contract negotiations. SOULs will spend their time engaging in conversations, primarily with BPS parents and students, to learn about issues that are important to them. What is learned from these conversations will help inform BTU contract proposals and campaign strategy.

No previous experience is necessary to be a SOUL. Only a willingness to learn new skills and engage in conversations with many new people. SOULs receive training and coaching in effective organizing practices, including how to have effective one-on-one conversations and how to escalate a campaign, in order to develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to build power and win the schools our students deserve.

Job Description/Expectations:

• Attend a minimum of 4 out of 5 in-person training sessions (Mondays from 2:00-5:00pm)
• Check-in weekly over the phone with a BTU staff organizer 
• Give a final presentation at the BTU Executive Board meeting on Wednesday, August 26
• Spend 10-12 hours per week (outside of training sessions) completing assigned tasks, primarily conversations with BPS parents and students. Some of these hours may also be spent attending solidarity actions or BTU events approved ahead of time
• Have one-on-one conversations, primarily with BPS parents and students
• Track and document information gathered from conversations and actions taken
• Attend workshops at the BTU/AFT MA Summer Organizing Institute on June 30 (strongly encouraged, but not required)
• Must be an active in-service BTU member to apply. We are seeking a diverse group of SOULs: paras, RSPs, people of color, women and nonbinary, LGBTQ+, disabled folks and others encouraged to apply!

Compensation: $20/hour for 60 hours total ($1200)
