State leaders are focusing on diversity inside the classroom after a recent NAACP report showed a substantial lack of teachers of color across Massachusetts.

While national data shows classrooms are more diverse than ever before, those numbers don’t reflect the diversity within the teaching community in the state.

The State Board of Education said the percentage of non-white teachers has increased only about 1 percent in the last decade, with teachers of color at an all time high of just 8 percent.

Last month, the Boston Teachers Union and the Boston branch of the NAACP put out a report pointing to the disparity.
