As teachers and staff across the state’s school districts face layoffs amid budget pressures, frustrated educators and experts say it is time the Legislature take action on a proposal that would update the education funding formula for the first time in 25 years.
“With each passing year, we fall further and further behind both the promise and obligation of our state education laws,” said Matthew Cregor of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice.
“While right now we may rank number one in the nation on test scores, we’re near the bottom on racial disparities and academic outcomes and funding is simply necessary to fix that problem.”
