Some 200 students, parents, teachers, and supporters packed the School Committee room and spilled into the hallway last week, pleading that their schools not be shut down or, if that had to happen, that they be allowed to stay together.

“I’m not asking, I’m begging: Don’t shut Westie down, please!” said Sarah Cook, a freshman at Urban Science Academy, which shares the West Roxbury Education Complex with West Roxbury Academy.

The passionate pleas came one day after Interim Superintendent Laura Perille told the two high schools that they will have to close at the end of this school year, and told the McCormack Middle School their school will shut down a year later. Both decisions must still be confirmed by the School Committee, Perille said.
