In 2018 teachers unions across the country made headlines by taking action to demand adequate funding for public education. In 2019 the #RedForEd and #FundOurFuture movements at the national and state level continue to keep the pressure on decision-makers to prioritize quality public education for every student.
At the BTU we continue to advocate for the schools our #StudentsDeserve through our own contract negotiations. On March 20, we showed our strength and unity by coming together for an energetic and inspiring rally at the Bolling Building. This was just a start. We will be sharing our next steps and new activist toolkit at our membership meeting next Wednesday, April 10 beginning at 4:30. Don’t forget to request childcare if you need it. We hope to see you there.
Again, two major priorities for this spring are 1) settling our contract and 2) passing fair funding legislation at the State House. Please sign our petition for the schools and contract our #StudentsDeserve, and stay involved through Friday actions and upcoming events. Last week, parents, students and educators marched for better school budgets, demonstrating the need for state legislators to update the funding formula. Please mark your calendars to join their call and show up in force at the State House on May 16 to call for full funding across the state!

Finally, tomorrow is National Paraprofessional Appreciation Day! We are so grateful for our amazing paraprofessionals — we know our schools wouldn’t work without them! Don’t forget about the statewide Paraprofessional Conference this Saturday, April 6, and check out this tribute to Paras from the AFT MA featuring some of our very own.
Have a good week.
