Dear BTU Member,

We hope everyone had a wonderful first week back to school!

Last week, BTU leaders visited several Boston Public Schools on a First Day of School Tour with Superintendent Dr. Cassellius and Mayor Walsh. We were also joined by AFT President Randi Weingarten and AFT MA President Beth Kontos in greeting students, educators, and staff to kick off the new school year.

Our educators and students make us proud every day. We were inspired by students like Lorena, a senior at the Burke who is looking forward to publishing her first book. We met Ms. McCarthy, a history teacher and proud alum of the Snowden International. She shared with city leadership that in order to best serve our students and educators, Massachusetts legislators must invest in our public schools. Please join her in calling on our legislators to take action by filling out the Fund Our Future postcards and bringing them to our membership meeting tomorrow!

Over 100 dedicated paraprofessionals attended the first ever Paras as Partners Conference, where educators shared their ideas to improve classrooms, curriculum, and teacher-partnerships. We were thrilled with the learning that took place and overwhelming interest the inaugural event.

We’ve started the school year off strong — and we are committed to keeping the momentum going as we continue to fight for Inclusion Done Right, wraparound services for our students through Community Hub Schools, and equitable funding for our public schools.

We have had many questions about when pay raises go into effect — BPS has shared that the 2% raises will be reflected in the first paycheck for this school year, September 20. Further information will be shared at our membership meeting.
Please join us this Wednesday, September 11 at 4:30pm for our first Membership Meeting . It will be an opportunity to meet other educators, hear about further contract implementation udpates, and discuss our goals for the coming year. We will also have the opportunity to hear from Superintendent Cassellius. If you need childcare, you can request it here! Please bring last year’s membership card for quick entry – new cards will be issued in October, but all members, including new members, are welcome.
