The Boston Teachers Union and President Jessica Tang issued the following statement today regarding the United States Supreme Court’s decision in two higher education admissions cases Students for Fair Admissions Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College, and Students for Fair Admissions Inc. v. University of North Carolina:

“Today’s terrible Supreme Court decision striking down affirmative action undermines the pursuit of equality in our society. This misguided ruling undermines our commitment to equity and inclusivity in education, which is the engine of growth and opportunity in our country.

Affirmative action is a vital tool that ensures equal access to opportunities for students of all backgrounds, dismantling the systemic barriers they face. It is through diversity and representation that we cultivate a rich educational environment, preparing students for a diverse world. This decision disregards settled law as well as the profound impact affirmative action has had on fostering social mobility and narrowing opportunity and achievement gaps.

On a personal note, as an Asian American alumna of Harvard University as well as an educator, I stand firmly in support of affirmative action.

As educators, we will continue to foster a positive learning environment where every student in Boston Public Schools feels valued and welcomed. We remain committed to fighting for justice, equity and equal opportunities for all our students.”
