BOSTON TEACHERS UNION WELCOMES BPS STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND EDUCATORS TO NEW SCHOOL YEAR
Union shares renewed commitment to students and families, resolves to confront threats from federal government
BOSTON – The Boston Teachers Union proudly welcomes our students, families, and educators back to another school year. This year, we return to our classrooms with the strength of a new contract, one that reflects the power of collective action and our shared vision for Boston’s public schools.
Thanks to our members’ organizing and advocacy, we secured important contract improvements, including additional wages and support for educators, expanded resources for inclusion services, and an important pay boost for paraprofessionals—who have been historically underpaid for their work. These victories represent progress not just for educators, but for the students and families who depend on fully supported schools.
At the same time, we recognize that this school year feels different. Families across Boston are facing extraordinary challenges due to the federal government’s overreach and their harmful policies. Cuts to healthcare and housing assistance, including slashes to Medicaid and Section 8, and the looming loss of jobs and benefits are creating real pain for the communities we serve. We’ve also seen the rise of ICE enforcement, tearing families apart and leaving too many of our students scared and uncertain about their futures. And on top of everything, we are facing threats to funding for public education. Instead of investing in children, families, and the future, this federal administration is making life more difficult for students, educators, and working families to survive.
Despite these challenges, Boston educators are committed to creating schools that are safe, inclusive, and nurturing places for all. Together—with families, community members, and allies—we will continue to push for the resources our schools and neighborhoods need, while standing up to policies that harm the people of Boston.
