Boston Teachers Union Statement on Trump’s Executive Orders Undermining American Public Education

The Boston Teachers Union will do everything within our power to fight the Trump administration’s latest executive orders, which divert critical education funding to private school vouchers and impose a politically motivated curriculum on public schools. These actions are a direct attack on the fundamental promise of public education: that every child deserves access to a high-quality education.

Redirecting discretionary education funding toward vouchers will take much-needed resources away from public schools, particularly in communities that rely on them the most. Instead of investing in stronger schools, better staffing, and student support services, this administration is prioritizing a privatization agenda that benefits a select few at the expense of millions of children.

Equally troubling is the administration’s push for a federally mandated curriculum that disregards academic expertise and seeks to restrict honest discussions about history and our nation. This order seeks to make our schools teach propaganda disguised as education. Educators are professionals dedicated to preparing students for the future, not political targets in a manufactured culture war. Public school curricula should be developed by educators and experts—not dictated by ideology. This order is an insult to students, educators, and academic integrity at large.

Public education is the foundation of our democracy and the future of our nation, and we will not stand by as it is undermined. The Boston Teachers Union rejects these policies. We will continue to advocate for the fully funded, inclusive, and high-quality public schools that all students deserve, keeping political agendas out of our sacred classrooms.
