Good Morning,

The past few months have proven that labor unions in this state and country still have the power to beat back powerful actors attempting to violate civil rights and suppress dissent. All of us, together, will play an important role over the coming years in preserving the rights of workers we’ve fought so hard to secure.

The stakes and the incessant pace of change can feel overwhelming. Thankfully, we are not in this fight alone. All schools will soon be holding 10-minute meetings to share vital information about the consequences of the Trump Administration’s attempt to completely undermine public education and worker’s rights. It also contains resources on what the BTU, AFT MA and the AFT are doing, and how you can engage to fight back.  Please be on the lookout for information about this 10-minute meeting at your school.

Local Elections

2025 is an election year for the City of Boston, and this is an opportunity for the BTU to continue to support candidates that will protect public education and labor rights.

The Boston Teachers Union is proud to endorse the following candidates for Boston City Council:

Boston City Council at Large: City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, and Councilor Julia Mejia; District 1 Councilor Gabriela Coletta-Zapata;, District 2 Councilor Ed Flynn;, District 3 Councilor John FitzGerald; District 4 Councilor Brian Worrell; and District 6 Councilor Ben Weber

Each candidate completed a questionnaire and was interviewed by our COPE Committee. Once the COPE Committee voted to endorse a candidate, the E-Board voted in support and from there, our membership voted for the final endorsement. This rigorous process requires at least a two-thirds vote of approval from each body.

Over the coming months, we will support these candidates through various avenues. We will share events for our members to meet with them, canvass, phone bank, and inform our membership why we support them. If you’d like to support these candidates, please sign up to join the BTU Electoral Action Team (BEAT)!

We are continuing to interview additional candidates and may announce additional endorsements for City of Boston elections in the coming months. Stay tuned!

Madison Park Creates Life-Changing Opportunities for Students

Congratulations to the educators and leadership at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School on signing an agreement with the city and local building trade unions that will create amazing opportunities for graduating seniors.

Last week BTU leadership visited Madison Park to celebrate the signing of a Project Labor Agreement between the Greater Boston Building Trades Union and Mayor Michelle Wu’s Administration. The agreement sets aside 50 seats in the Building Pathways Program for Madison Park’s top-performing seniors. Building Pathways is an initiative created by local unions to break down barriers of entry into Boston’s lucrative construction industry. If students complete the Pathways program, they are guaranteed an apprenticeship in their trade of choice. We are thrilled to see Boston Public students become the builders of Boston’s future!
Celebrating Haitian American Heritage Month

May is a month dedicated to honoring and celebrating numerous cultures. The BTU reached out to Bianca Pierre, the head of the BTU Haitian Educators Committee, to write a bit about the significance of this month:

Haitian Heritage Month, celebrated each May, honors Haiti’s rich culture, history, and global contributions—including its legacy as the first Black republic.

It highlights key moments like Haitian Flag Day on May 18, a powerful symbol of pride and unity. The month is marked by vibrant celebrations of Haitian art, music, cuisine, and community. Local upcoming highlights include the Grand Opening of the Toussaint Louverture Cultural Center (LoveJoy Wharf 131 Beverly St. Boston, MA 02114) on May 20 at 5 PM, and the Mattahunt Elementary School’s celebration on May 30 at 8:15 AM.

Governor’s K-12 Graduation Council is seeking feedback from YOU!

In the wake of the voters’ approval of Question 2, which ended the use of the MCAS as a graduation requirement, Governor Healey established a Statewide Graduation Council to study the issue of graduation requirements in Massachusetts and to develop a set of recommendations for a new statewide standard for high school graduation. As part of this initiative, the K-12 Statewide Graduation Council is hosting six regional and virtual listening sessions to gather feedback directly from communities, including students, families, educators, administrators, higher education experts, the business community, and the public.

The Greater Boston Area Listening Session is scheduled on Wednesday, May 28 from 5-7 PM at Somerville High School, 81 Highland Ave. in Somerville.  We strongly encourage BTU members to make your voices heard at this important session. This session is open to all members of the public and we invite you to share this information with your network.

The listening session will focus on receiving feedback and input on our essential question: “What should it mean to graduate from high school in Massachusetts?”

Support your fellow union members as they fight to secure their first-ever fair contracts at the Neighborhood House Charter School and Codman Academy!
