In case you missed it: Federal Education Secretary Arne Duncan barnstormed through parts of the country last week to accept accolades for Race To The Top (RTTP) and its new ‘reforms.’

An article in the NY Times captured the euphoric mood in some states that got the cash and pointed out an interesting – but troubling – point about how Mr. Duncan’s educational reforms were, well, so antithetical to traditional Democratic Party tradition and values:

“Representative John Kline, Republican of Minnesota, the ranking minority member of the House Labor and Education Committee, said in an interview that some of Mr. Duncan’s reforms, especially ones unpopular with unions, came straight from the traditional Republican playbook.”

“‘I said, ‘Arne, only you can do that,’ ” Mr. Kline said. ” ‘You’re the secretary of education for a Democratic president.'”

Point made!
