Boston has named three candidates to potentially lead the city’s schools.
The finalists are all people of color: Marie Izquierdo, chief academic officer for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools in Florida; Brenda Cassellius, former Minnesota education commissioner; and Oscar Santos, head of school for the Cathedral High School in Boston’s South End.
They will face public interviews from April 22 through 24.
Laura Perille has been serving as interim superintendent since last summer, when Tommy Chang stepped down. Chang had faced a lot of criticism over his proposals to change school start times and close the Mattahunt Elementary School in 2016.
The next superintendent will take the reins as the district is in the middle of a 10-year, $1 billion plan to reshape the district with new facilities, called BuildBPS.
