The Boston Teachers Union, along with dozens of local teachers, are starting the process of bringing ethnic studies to the district in hopes of one day creating a new area of the curriculum for students.
The group held an Ethnic Studies Institute Friday for teachers to start thinking about how to incorporate ethnic lessons into their current plans as well as how to eventually create a lesson plan that can be used throughout the district.
They are hoping that the study will keep students of color more engaged with their studies and better reflect Boston students’ diverse racial, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
“We feel like it is important to make sure the curriculum is relevant and engaging,” said Natalia Cuadra-Saez, a member of the Boston Teacher’s Union. “I think the curriculum needs to reflect that and center around the lives and experiences of people of color.”
