Part 1: New money and reallocated old money

As the March 27 date of the School Committee budget vote approaches, schools ramped up their appeals to reverse damaging personnel cuts, while hundreds of Boston Teachers Union members and supporters demonstrated for a better contract at the BPS’s Bolling Building headquarters.

The BTU contract situation is separate from the budget. The budget numbers are based on the current BTU contract. When a new contract is signed, the mayor will submit a supplemental budget to fund it.

But the teachers in their contract dispute and the parents in their efforts to restore school cuts are raising many of the same demands: Schools need money for counselors, elementary school specialists, and more staff to facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities.
