Robots are arriving in Boston’s public high schools — to serve human students by increasing their interest in science and technology career paths.
Softbanks Robotics America has provided 10 Pepper robots to Boston Public Schools during the past six months and anticipates donating more so all the high schools in Boston have one for their computer science programs.
The English High School robotics team in Jamaica Plain has been working with their Pepper robot since spring, learning how to advance their programming skills and in turn look toward a future in tech.
“It’s a tool they get to interact with,” said programming and web development teacher Howie Horner. “I can’t say enough. By having robots that they have access to, it provides access in itself to a career, ideas and extensions.”
His class keeps their Pepper robot out so students get time each day to work with it and advance their knowledge.
“I enjoy working with Pepper because I feel powerful when I can control technology,” junior Angy Bedoya said. “It’s a part of our future.”
