As educators, we believe that all our students deserve respect, protection, and environments where they are empowered to learn, achieve, and grow. That is why we are holding an Unafraid Educators Week of Action to show support for immigrant and undocumented students and families.
Resources are available for all educators to join daily actions. Today, educators are encouraged to take photos with signs, post them to social media, and email them to photos@btu.org. Tomorrow, consider joining a May Day rally. Thursday, contact your representatives to support in-state tuition for undocumented students. On Friday, consider donating to the Unafraid Scholarship, helping to meet our goal of $100,000 towards college for undocumented BPS high school students.
Check out the BTU’s UnafraidEducators.org website with year-round resources.
BTU members are also advocating for our students with disabilities. Tomorrow, we are proud to screen the premiere of Intelligent Lives, which stars Naieer, a student from the Henderson Inclusion Upper School. The film follows him as he navigates high school and college and begins his career. We will then discuss the film with Dr. Bill Henderson, who has done so much to advance inclusion within BPS. We hope to see you at the BTUtomorrow night at 5 PM.
We as educators understand the importance of inclusion. That is why we continue to demand through our contract negoations that the School Department step up and support inclusion done right.
Share your experiences with inclusion in the Boston Public Schools in this anonymous survey being conducted as part of the AFT/BTU Teacher Leadership Program.
Thousands of educators, students, and community members have already signed our petition demanding the contract #StudentsDeserve. We plan to deliver these petitions to the School Department on May 22.
Please share the petition with family and friends!
Finally, please join the BTU and educators as we advocate for full funding of schools statewide! BTU will join educators, parents, and allies at the State House on May 16 for the #FundOurFuture rally, meeting with legislators and making our voices heard. The time to pass the PROMISE and CHERISH Acts is now! Sign a commitment to join educators from across the state.
