Resolution in Support of Striking UESF Workers
WHEREAS, educators across the country are facing escalating budget shortfalls driven by rising costs, inadequate public funding, and political choices that prioritize austerity over fully funding public education; and
WHEREAS, members of the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF), AFT Local #61 are currently on strike to demand fair wages, manageable workloads, and the resources necessary to serve students and communities with dignity; and
WHEREAS, the Boston Teachers Union and UESF face shared challenges, including district budget crises that threaten educator livelihoods, undermine learning conditions, and destabilize public schools; and
WHEREAS, austerity-driven budgets disproportionately impact working-class students, students of color, multilingual learners, and students with disabilities, while placing increasing burdens on educators to do more with less; and
WHEREAS, the labor movement is strongest when unions stand together across cities and states to resist underfunding, defend public education, and assert that educators’ working conditions are students’ learning conditions;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Boston Teachers Union will publicly declare that we stand in solidarity with our striking union siblings in UESF through a written statement published on the BTU website, social media, and via press release, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Boston Teachers Union will make a donation of $2000, one dollar for every California educator who received a layoff notice in 2024, to UESF’s strike fund, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Boston Teachers Union will take a UESF solidarity photo and/or video at its February 2026 Membership meeting to be uploaded to social media, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Boston Teachers Union will contact Building Reps and encourage schools to wear blue this Friday and take UESF solidarity photos and videos and submit them to photos@btu.org to be uploaded to social media.
