‘The School Committee is pushing to have all classroom teachers hold more than one teaching license, including one specifically in special education, and make additional staffing contingent on the needs of students.

The union, however, is concerned the multilicensing requirement will lead to overreliance on a single teacher to do work that should be handled by a special education teacher or another specialist. That situation, the union has said, could result in students with disabilities not getting all the additional help they are legally entitled to receive.

“We hope the city will respond to our urgent and reasonable proposals for students with special needs,” said Erik Berg, the union’s president, in an interview, noting members are eager to secure a contract deal “that meets the needs of their students.”’
