Family2Family Conference, Upcoming BTU Events and Opportunities

Published On: March 21, 2023
We have several important and exciting events coming up – mark your calendars! Join us this Saturday for the Family2Family Conference, formerly known as Parent2Parent. Our theme this year is Creating Safe and Welcoming Schools, and it will take place at the Reggie Lewis Center in conjunction with a Community Labor United event. As we’ve all adjusted to huge changes in our lives and schools, collaborating to support students is more important than ever. This is a conference for parents/caregivers AND educators to share and learn from each other, support family engagement, promote family advocacy, and strengthen family and educator collaboration. Register here to attend!

We’re also excited to co-host Educators of Color Night next Wednesday, March 29, which is an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet other educators of color in BPS. We’ll have resource tables and light food. This event is co-sponsored by the BTU and the Office of Recruitment, Cultivation & Diversity Programs, and we are also partnering with many other organizations that are all committed to attracting, supporting and retaining educators of color.

We’ll also be holding a BTU/AFT Para/PSRP Conference next weekend, April 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The conference is a day of collaboration and learning with fellow paraprofessionals from around the state. The deadline for registration is March 30. For any questions about the conference, please contact Field Rep Colleen Hart.

From the Election Committee: A full list of candidates and ballot order can be found here. For NON-PRIMARY positions, candidate statements for the Boston Union Teacher newspaper are due TODAY, March 21. The word limit is 300 or 400 words (depending on position), including your name and office you are seeking. Send your statements and a clear, high-resolution picture of yourself to BTU paper editors Anne Slater and Michael Maguire.

Congratulations to the RTC Committee and other public sector unions for successfully advocating for a one time increase to the COLA base from 2% to 5%!  Thank you to Mayor Wu and her office for their support as well as the unanimous vote from the City Council. There already was a 3% increase, so the additional 2% begins 7/1/22 (retroactively) and expires 6/30/23. We are awaiting details about when the increase will take effect.

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re celebrating all month long at the BTU! Our friends at ShareMyLesson have plenty of resources to incorporate into your lesson plans and teach your students about women’s contributions to science, politics, civil rights, and more.

Don’t forget, the BPS Special Education Hotline we negotiated in our most recent contract is now up and running. The phone number is (617) 635-8133. BPS has shared that this number is only for staff. Callers will remain anonymous unless they would like to identify themselves. This number should not be used for emergencies or concerns about student safety.

Last chance to share your ideas: Please join the BPS Capital Planning team, Boston Public Facilities Department and the Mayor’s Office for an upcoming Green New Deal for BPS listening session to share your experiences with BPS with the design team. The second session is TONIGHT, March 21 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. These focus group sessions are separate from the school-based ones and are specific to hearing educator perspectives on physical space and building needs. Please register now!
